Hydroxycut
Hydroxycut, one of America’s top selling over the counter weight loss products has been recalled by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences, Inc. The products were marketed for weight-loss, as fat burners, as energy-enhancers, as low carb diet aids, and for water loss.
The Hydroxycut products, which sold over nine million units in 2008 alone, were marketed under the Iovate and MuscleTech brand names.
The recall was initiated after the FDA received 23 reports of serious health problems related to liver damage. One death was reported, as well as six patients diagnosed with serious liver disease and two requiring liver transplant. Other health problems reported included seizures; cardiovascular disorders; and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.
